It is the most wonderful time of the year for all moviegoers. That’s right, it’s Oscar season! The nominations were announced yesterday and came with the usual snags and surprises. There is so much to celebrate in terms of diversity, and maybe even more than you think. Not only are we seeing greater cultural diversity being praised, but new technological media are also being honored.
For the first time, a film made for virtual reality (VR) has been nominated for one of Hollywood’s most prestigious awards. The history of Google Spotlight, Pearl, was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Animated Short category.
The film follows the life of a father and his daughter seen from the passenger seat of the car they share, and the music that brings them to life.
pearl was directed by former Oscar winner Patrick Osborne, who received the award for his work on the adorable Disney short, Feast.
There is a little caveat to this news, however. Considering the rules of the nomination process, the 360 ââcut of the film is not the same as the one that was nominated. A traditional cut of the film was created to be able to be projected in traditional theaters. This cut is the nominated film.
Nonetheless, this is an exciting development for VR content and will draw attention to the artistic potential of the medium.
