Hold on to your helmet. Fort Worth’s first-ever full-body virtual reality experience, called VR sandboxlanded at the Crockett Row complex at West 7th.
The 10,000 square foot space, which will officially open Friday, June 24 at 2956 Crockett St., features four life-size “Holodecks” equipped with futuristic VR technology that allows up to six people to explore and play together in new worlds. Each player can see and physically interact with everyone inside, but participants feel like they’ve stepped into a game or movie, the creators say.
A statement describes the experience as follows: “Together with friends, family or colleagues, players are equipped with a VR headset, haptic vest, backpack and motion sensors at the wrists and ankles Participants can see and interact with their team through virtual reality goggles as they move freely together to complete adventures, which include experiences such as defeating zombies in a haunted mansion or participating in a family event star trek space mission.”
Six exclusive VR experiences are offered at the Fort Worth site, including “Amber Sky 2088”, “Deadwood Mansion”, “Curse of Davy Jones”, “Unbound Fighting League (UFL)”, “Star Trek Discover: Away Mission”, and their new experience, “Deadwood Valley”. (Watch a preview of “Deadwood Valley” here.)
The Fort Worth Sandbox is the brand’s second in Texas (after Austin) and 14th in the United States, with others in Asia, Canada and soon in Europe. A Dallas location at Mockingbird Station is also set to open on June 24.
The release says Sandbox is endorsed by celebrities including Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom and Will Smith.
“Launching in Fort Worth, our first North Texas location, is extremely exciting for us,” said Steven Zhao, founder of Sandbox VR, in the release. “We are proud to bring Sandbox VR to this vibrant community of families, college students, and young professionals.”
Each experience lasts around 45 minutes (add an additional 45 minutes for setup, practice, and post-game video viewing), and it’s not a cheap night out. Each experience is $50 per person, with a minimum of two guests; the UFL game has a minimum of four guests. The website indicates that prices may vary on off-peak days and/or times. Group reservations are available.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday through Saturday.
Participants must be at least 8 years old and 48 inches or taller to play, and corrective eyewear cannot be worn. (Be sure to check the FAQs for more physical requirements.) For more information and reservations, visit the website.
