Björk has been melting our brains since the ’80s, but the Icelandic artist is always finding new ways to create innovative art that shocks us, even after all these years. The singer is 51 years old now, but her experience has not worn her out. In fact, she seems to have the advantage. She has seen new technologies emerge and the way art has responded to them, so she has a larger context from which things like virtual reality are starting to become more mainstream. She certainly showed that with her VR clip for âNotget VR,â which she shared today. It’s an absolute trip (Going through
).
While we would imagine the experience would be much more immersive with a VR headset, you don’t need it to watch the video on YouTube. Even in this format, it is a visual marvel. The clip, directed by Warren Du Preez and Nick Thornton Jones, features a digitally rendered Björk as what looks like some sort of dark angel. As the song progresses, it becomes more and more illuminated with a bright yellow light until it becomes so bright that the clip turns white. We can only imagine how beautiful it is in virtual reality, because even in two dimensions it is a journey. Björk’s fascination with technology seems to have always been as strong as it is today. This clip reminds us of that classic video of Björk taking apart his large square TV to explore what it looks like and how it works inside.
