Welcome to the Q&A with the TV critic – also known by some TV fans as their “TV therapist” – Matt Roush, who will try to answer anything you love, hate, be confused or frustrated or thrilled in the vast today’s television landscape. (We know the background music is too loud, but there is still closed captioning.)
One caveat: this is a spoiler-free area, so we won’t be discussing upcoming storylines here unless it’s already common knowledge. Give the hook to Sofia
Question: I’ve never written to you before, but I have a question. Am I the only one concerned with the behavior of Sofia vergara to America has talent? If someone disagrees with her, she starts an argument. It happened a few times. One day when one of her favorites didn’t win, she turned to the audience and said, âWhat’s wrong with you? It’s a contest and people can vote however they want. I don’t think you should comment to the audience. It is in bad taste. It is also a family show and the dress must be appropriate. – Raemath
Matt Rouss: I’m sure you’re not alone, but I would also bet Sofia behaves and dresses exactly the way the producers hope and expect her to. (She wasn’t exactly a violet shrinking on Modern family or its countless commercial appearances.) This kind of increased judge behavior is what the genre calls it – for example, I always kept the mute button handy whenever So you think you can dance‘s Mary Murphy (whom I loved by the way) had a temper tantrum. Likewise, they expect judges to overreact when one of their favorites doesn’t pass. Why take it personally? But this discussion illustrates why, on the very rare occasion that I tune in Talent more, I speed up the comments of the judges. They are absolutely my least favorite aspect of the series.
Are Talentexaggerated production values?
Question: America has talent has gone completely nuts. My family and friends still watched it and happily discussed it for several days afterwards. Now the discussions usually revolve around whether to stop watching or stick with it (thank God for the fast-forward!) And hope that gets better. It has become average, waaaaaay overproduced. The lighting and constant movement of the Vegas-style production sets are obnoxious and distract the performers, who themselves have not been on par with those of previous years. It’s bad enough, but then to hear Simon cowell oozing out compliments and telling them they’re the best to appear on the show is amazing at best. What happened to the real (?) Simon of blunt honesty in his performance review? So far the joy of watching Sofia has kept us watching, but unless something changes, this will be the final season for many of us. – Iris G
Matt Rouss: I can’t really disagree with this, although I’ve always found Talent being ridiculously overproduced, but that fit in with the fact that these acts all vie for a hit on the Vegas stage, which isn’t like playing off Broadway. If they’re overwhelmed by the bells and whistles, they’re probably on the wrong show. And I also miss the Simon of American Idol. As they let him (and others) let off steam when they share some of the worst audition rounds, I cringe when I see him gush over performances that could have earned him some deservedly hard truths and frank in the program that introduced him to the American. public. But these are very different worlds, and Idolnot what it was either.
Give it to the children Talent Spectacle
Question: My wife and i watched America has talent from the beginning. Why don’t the producers have a show for kids until maybe 17? – Barry g
Matt Rouss: I guess you mean a spin-off that would be alone for children under a certain age. But isn’t that one of the charms (if that’s the term) of America has talent, that anyone of any age can participate? I often feel like kids almost have an unfair advantage when it comes to being an adorable novelty act, and quite a few young performers have won their seasons. I can’t tell from this if you hate when young people have their dreams squashed when they don’t come to an end, or if you think it’s unfair that some of the refined adult acts are overshadowed by a early upstart. Anyway, I doubt they know what has been a successful formula.
Give the new talent more than one Voice
Question: Why are âcoachesâ The voice allowed us to bore us with nonsense, when the idea behind the show is supposed to be the discovery of new emerging talent? I would love to listen to new talent and not just sit there watching has-beens trying to convince us that they “always got it”. – Michael K
Matt Rouss: Ah, that’s the catch. I agree with you – well, maybe not the has-been part (we’re talking Ariana Grande, John legend, Kelly clarkson, and Blake Shelton, after all) – that coaches regularly outshine competitors, which may explain why so little or no Voice the winners reached the level of fame of a American Idol champion like Kelly Clarkson. But again, this is the formula that works for The voice, and while that keeps me from being a fan once the blind auditions are over – that’s the great part of the show, every season – their star power is the engine around which everything else of this show is running. This is not likely to change.
Alienated by delays
Question: Me and others searched for the start date of our favorite show, Foreign resident. When i received TV Guide Magazine‘s Returning Favorites with a fall calendar, thought it had to be there, but no Foreign resident. What exactly is Syfy waiting for? It was one of the most popular new shows from last season. Please don’t tell us they canceled it. What is happening? – Simon h
Matt Rouss: Relax. Foreign resident and her star who should be nominated for the Emmy Awards Alain Tudyk, will be back, but not in the fall. Not all series are fall series, and this especially applies to short duration cable series like Extraterrestrial, whose 10-episode first season aired last winter. Syfy has yet to release an official premiere date for Extraterrestrialis the second season, but it’s likely she could return in the same general time frame. (The Returning Favorites issue only covers the months between September and late November, not counting many new lineup premieres between Thanksgiving and New Years. But in January, beware – and watch out for the winter preview.)
Status reports
Question: I wonder if there will ever be a third season of Condor? Nothing new on this? – Lucas
Matt Rouss: Nothing lately. This spy thriller was one of the shows affected when AT & T’s audience network disappeared. Two seasons have been filmed, and the second will have its official US premiere on Epix starting November 7th. (The first season aired in March.) Because no mention has yet been made of a third season, and it’s been two years since the shooting of the second season, it looks like the best chance Condor Has its return is whether Epix is ââsatisfied enough with its performance to put it back on the line. I think the odds are slim, but because MGM (which operates Epix) was one of the producers and distributors of the show , maybe a miracle will happen.
Question: Whatever happened to Land of songs? Will he ever come back? My family and I really enjoyed it. – Dean
Matt Rouss: This terrific songwriting contest, which aired on NBC in the summer of 2019 and spring 2020, is no longer listed on NBC’s press website, so we should consider it to be inactive at this time. But like so many series in the reality space, it was never officially canceled either, to my knowledge. It is therefore always possible to see him again one day. I hope so, anyway.
Question: When will the new episode of Jesse stone go on television? – Georges M
Matt Rouss: They will have to do it first. It is a perpetual question, and although Tom selleck has said on several occasions that he hopes to get another film in the franchise written and filmed during one of his breaks from Blue blood, it hasn’t happened yet. If and when a 10e Jesse stone film is being produced, it will likely air on one of the Hallmark channels, which aired the ninth and so far the last in the series, which started on CBS in 2005, when broadcast networks were still showing TV movies. .
